Accounting systems play a vital role in businesses of all sizes, but many owners and managers of small or
medium-size companies report that accounting is a pain point for their companies. A new white paper by Techdirt Insight Community, in conjunction with
MyVenturePad and SAP, examines the reasons for dissatisfaction and considers how accounting software could be better tailored to the SME market.
The white paper is based on a survey and a webinar hosted by MyVenturePad. Participants in the webinar included:
- Barbara Weltman, author of "Big Ideas for Small Business"
- Manju Bansal, Director of Solution Marketing for SAP Labs
- Dennis Howlett, accounting expert and host of the Accman blog
The panelists agreed that the crux of the problem is that major accounting applications are designed to be as complete and flexible as possible,
and the resulting complexity makes the software difficult to use. This is especially true if - as is often the case in a small business -
the person tasked with keeping the books does not have a thorough grasp of accounting principles to begin with.
Howlett said some accounting applications are beginning to emerge using new technology such as cloud computing.
SAP is working to identify the most critical 10 to 15 functions that businesses need, and then build flexibility and modularity around them, Bansal said.
Small businesses need something they can "jump right into," Weltman said.
